I love what I see. I live in Temple City, California 91780 and feel very sad there is no way I can be involved with a project like this. I am 69 years old and am working towards becoming a teacher. I have been teaching in a few schools but I am working for my degree. Thank goodness for the people who help with this program. I would like to have someone e-mail me or mail me any updates. Sincerely, Penny Gudel

I live in Matteson, Illinois. Are there farms close by where one can join? There are farms all around here but I never see any activity. I am from a country where farming is a matter of existence and it would be nice to be outdoors helping out.

I think this is different in that people from urban areas are also chipping in to help. It is also scheduled volunteer time and not just for a specific harvest - it happens every month no matter what needs to be done, on a different farm in a different area. Folks are exposed to many different ways of farming during all seasons.

Cooperative harvesting and farming never really went away; we are just adding to it and raising the profile a bit.

Well, what do you know, we're " inventing the wheel." I grew up on a farm in Iowa and every summer farmers rotated the farms threshing oats and filling silos with silage (chopped corn stalks that fermented and was like a "liquor" fed to cattle.} What happened to the small farmer? The mechanization and subsidies to not grow crops to keep the prices up forced out the small farmer--couldn't afford the price of feed suppliments needed.
My folks had friends who helped out, for free, when there was illness or a bumper crop to be harvested when it was ripe. So, what's so new about volunteering to help farmers--more fashionable now?

I grew up on a farm in Richmond Co. NC I Still live in the small town of Ellerbe and enjoy fresh vegetables from my relatives gardens. I think it is a great idea to help small farmers for food. My brother is so discouraged with his produce farming and feels that he might as well go bury his money in the ground since he can't make anything after expenses. He has 50+ acres of land. He makes his living off of poultry but has continued to plant tomatoes and a few other vegetables. There has got to be a way to get food to the people and money to pay the taxes on the land. How can crop mob help my brother and other small farmers in the area? I would like to know more about this group. susanhillsmith@yahoo.com
